Parent Involvement

While Troop 507 strives to be a boy-led organization, the support and commitment of parents is essential to our success.  Please consider how you might help.  Here is an outline for you:

Become a Trained Adult
Every boy deserves trained adults!  In order to understand the program and ensure youth protection, ALL adults need some training.  Basic trainng is available on-line.  Other avenues to grow in knowledge are available through Roundtables, University of Scouting, Basic Leader Training, Wood Badge. Go to the Boston Minuteman website: www.bsaboston.org to link to find out more about training, or see a Scoutmaster.

Attend Troop Committee Meetings
All parents are considered part of the Troop Committee and strongly encouraged to attend four meetings a year to discuss and steer the activities of the troop.  It is the best way to learn about the Troop,  "meet the parents", and get your questions answered.

Participate in a Monthly Outing
Chaperones and drivers are needed each month for the troop outing.  Come see your scout and the troop in action!

Volunteer for a Board of Review
As the last step of each advancement rank, as scout must pass a Board of Review.  In Troop 507, the Board of Review is comprised of three parents, and all parents are eligible.  Answer the call (or email) when the Advancement Chair asks for volunteers!

Join the Christmas Tree Pickup
Every family is expected to join in the fun of the Christmas Tree Pickup in early January.  A lot of effort goes into making the fundraiser a success, including publicity, collecting tree orders, counting money, collecting food donations, cooking, organizing the kitchen, and coordinating the trucks and pickup routes.  There’s a job for everyone and lots of fun to be had.

Coordinate a Monthly Outing
Make the arrangements for a monthly trip, including reserving the site, preparing a flyer, collecting permission slips and money.  Work with the Scoutmaster and the troop’s Outings expert to ensure a safe and fun trip.

Become a Merit Badge Counselor
Offer your time, experience, and knowledge to help guide Scouts in one or more of the merit badge subjects.  Merit badge counselors are a key to a scout’s advancement. Merit badge counselors must register with Boston Minuteman Council.

Ease in to a Volunteer Position
Volunteer opportunities are always available for interested parents. Named positions on the Troop Committee rotate every few years, and assistants are currently needed for several positions.   Interested in becoming Committee Chair, Outings Coordinator, Advancement Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Registrar, or taking on another role?  Please see the Scoutmaster or the Committee Chair for more information.

Attend Summer Camp
Plan to spend a couple of days at T. L. Storer while your son attends summer camp.  Parents rotate through the week to ensure enough adult coverage.  See what all the excitement is about!
